Part 2 - Become Organised this Christmas

4.  With list in hand - Go Shopping
This can be as easy as going to your favorite website and ordering your presents so they are delivered to your door.    Otherwise, head off to your local shopping mall and buy only those presents that you have on your list.

If you have decided to make your own gift baskets here are a few simple and easy suggestions.

For a family gift make a nice Christmas-themed cookie jar.  Fill it with Christmas candy or cookies!  Every year when the family gets out the Christmas cookie jar, they will think of you!

Grandparents love to receive anything that grandchildren make.   Do a video of the children, include a bath time, them reading or playing at school.  A few minutes taken over a month or two will make an interesting video.  How about a collage of photos of the grandchildren!.  The children can help with this project.

A coffee cup filled with a coffee blend, some chocolate and DVD.

How about a pampering gift basket for mom or your sister?

5.  Wrapping

A time saving tip…when you return from shopping, wrap and label as many gifts as you can and store them away until the “big day”.

Presents that are being posted, need to be wrapped and posted ASAP.

6.  Christmas Decorations

Personally I hate dragging the decorations out each year and putting up the tree.  But the look on my son’s face when the house and tree have been decorated is worth the effort.

Each year when you are putting away the decorations, make sure they are working.  If not, throw them out – don’t pack broken or unwanted items.  I add an item to the tree each year for my young son.  This allows us to reminisce about what has happened over the last year and spend some quality family time together.

Put aside an afternoon and make a decoration with your children it doesn’t have to be expensive.  I have little boxes under the tree that have their hand prints and a special message.

Lastly enjoy Christmas.  With a little bit of planning, everyone can participate in wrapping presents, giving the presents and mostly, enjoying the family time together.

Become organized this Christmas.

For most of us, we are so busy living our lives that we forget just how quickly Christmas is upon us.

Here is a list of 6 simple strategies to help you be organized this Christmas and enjoy the festive season.

1.  Take the time to plan ahead this Christmas.
Set aside a morning in the first week in December.

Get yourself a cup of coffee a notepad and pen.  Take the phone off the hook, organize the children so you aren’t interrupted and take half an hour to make lists for the following:

(a)  Gift giving
(b)  Christmas Cards
(c)  Christmas Decorating

2.  First let’s deal with the Card List
Now that you have written out the Christmas card list, when you shop next buy the required amount of Christmas cards.

The following day divide your list into say 5, and then over the next 5 days write out your Christmas cards until the list is complete.  In the last week of November post out your cards.

3.  The Gift Giving List
This project is a little bigger than the last, however if you are organized it can be fun and done in a couple of weeks.

Sit down and go through the list of people you will be giving or sending a gift to this year.  If you have family or friends who will need their gifts sent through the mail then they need to be put at the top of the list as you will want to take care of their presents first.   (Aim to post their presents within the next two weeks)

If you have been buying gifts throughout the year go through the gifts and assign them to the appropriate people on your list.  (Shopping for Christmas at sale time is an excellent idea as it makes the burden a lot easier and also helps with the family budget).

Take a look again at your list, no doubt you have whittled away a few of those names.  If you have presents that haven’t been assigned in the Christmas gift box leave these in case you have forgotten someone or a friend drops around, then you have something to give to them.

For the remaining names I break these into smaller lists.  Presents that need to be purchased and presents that I can make.  I personally think that giving a present made by you is something special.  Now before you say… I can’t make anything have you thought about a “gift basket” or “gifts in a jar”.  They are very easy and simple to make; they look fantastic and are always well received by the recipient.

You can either create this gift yourself and present it or you can put all of the items in a basket and present the gift basket, so that the recipient can decorate the tree themselves.

If you are going to make this gift - decorate a small Christmas tree with homemade ornaments. If you aren't very crafty a lot of the cheaper stores have excellent oraments at very reasonable prices. Include miniature toys, cookies, or potpourri bags, small photo frames etc. Each year you can give another ornament for your friend to add to their tree.

Each year they will be reminded of you at Christmas.

I suggest that you make a point of it this week buying those cards and then over the next week or so start by each day writing out 5 days. By the first or second week in November you will have written out all of your cards.

By the last week of November - its time to post them.

On everyone's list should be either your Mom or Sister or female friend.

So why not create a gift basket for a lady - here is a simple basket which every lady will enjoy.

For this gift idea I suggest including some lingerie and massage oils into a basket. Include flowers, scented bubble bath, a soft jazzy CD, candles and a bottle of champagne, along with two wine glasses.

Put a big ribbon around the basket for presentation - done !

Mechanic's Hand Cleanser
Grind up a bar or two of your soap...

1 c. borax
1-2 t. pure turpentine
1 t. sweet orange essential oil
1 c. ground soap
With very clean hands, work the turpentine and essential oil into the borax until there are no lumps left, then work into the soap. Keep it in a wide-mouthed jar or tin that's easy for him to open when his hands are greasy, and which you won't mind getting black on the outside. Don't forget to put a nail brush and pumice stone out with the hand cleanser.

Fill a bucket with things that Dad can use in the garage or shed. Make it around a garden theme or a motor theme or golf theme.. in fact the type of basket you create is endless.

Makes One Bar 1 4-ounce bar
Castile soap (or pure white unscented... like ivory)
1/4 cup distilled water
1/4 cup powdered milk
1 tablespoon sweet almond oil
1/8 teaspoon peach fragrance oil
1 drop orange food coloring {optional}
Shred the Castile soap and set aside. Heat the water in a heavy saucepan over low heat. Stir in the shredded soap until it forms a sticky mass. Remove the pan from the heat and add the powdered milk, Sweet almond oil, Peach fragrance oil, food coloring; stir until well-blended. Spoon the soap into its mold and let set for four hours or until hardened.

Ever wondered what to give the “Person Who Has Everything”? A Gift Basket could be just the thing. Have you been from shop to shop and thought “Yes This is It” and then discounted the gift because it wasn’t really what you wanted.

My best friend has everything and when I say everything, “I Mean Everything”. She has either been given or purchased every conceivable gadget available in the last 5 years. She loves to shop. One of her motto’s is “Shop Til you Drop, Spend Til the End”. And she lives by that rule!

When it comes to gifts for my friend – she is “The Hardest Person to Buy For”. Oh did I tell you, she even has a kitchen sink on her car key tag !

It was while looking for a present for my friend that I thought “What About A Gift Basket”. I was in a specialized shop and the sign said “For the Person Who Has Everything” and the light turned on.

I’m not sure if you are aware but these days gift baskets have changed. No longer are they the old style cane baskets (although there are some very attractive cane baskets available on today’s market). Today Gift Baskets came in all shapes and sizes. In fact, it is basically up to your imagination as to what a “Gift Basket” should be. You can use old shoes, buckets, calico bags, pot plant holders in fact anything that holds what items you purchase to fill the basket with.

Gift Baskets are lots of fun to create and very easy to make. Gone are the days of saying… oh I’m not creative enough to make a professional looking basket. Anyone can make a professional looking basket – as long as you have some imagination and a willingness to give it a try.

If you are stuck for a present for that “Person Who Has Everything” then a Gift Basket is for you!

Firstly decide on a theme or if you aren’t sure then write down the interests of the recipient ie. golf or tennis, shopping etc. You could even base it around a coming event. Once you have made the list, work your way through it until you find something that stands out that would fit into your Gift Basket “theme”.

For today’s basket lets say your friend loves to entertain and one of her favorite meals is “Italian” food.

You could choose a selection of baskets for this theme; today we will use a large pasta bowl as our “basket” or a large cooking pot. Our basket needs to be large enough to hold the goodies that we are going to purchase so that we can then turn this into a Professional Looking “Gift Basket”. If neither of these ideas appeals to you, let your imagination take over and choose something that fits into your theme selection.

Next take yourself down to the local supermarket or deli who specialize in gourmet foods. Set yourself a budget as to what you want to spend and then go about buying non-perishable items to fill the basket. Speak to the shop attendant to ensure that the items you are purchasing fit into your theme. Buy different colors and types of pasta to give variety of color and shape to your basket.

Next take yourself to a department store or kitchenware shop and purchase some really great utensils to go with the other items that you have purchased.

You could also add an “Easy Step by Step Guide” if they need cooking help, or send them to a “Cooking Lesson” for something extra.

Once you have gathered these items, it is time to begin to assemble your gift basket.
Depending upon the type of basket you have chosen you may need to fill the bottom of the basket with some shredded paper, as this will give the basket height. Place the items in the basket to give a layered effect. Layering items at different heights in the basket makes the overall design more pleasing to the eye.

Use small pieces of tape to hold items in place. Next wrap clear cellophane around the outside of the basket and tie the top with wired ribbon or curling ribbon to match the color scheme of your gift.

To finish off our basket make a gift tag and tuck a small item into the ribbon around the basket to give a professional look.
